Applied Learning refers to an approach that emphasises authentic and practice-oriented learning experiences, and is not necessarily restricted to vocational or technical education.
It gives learners additional opportunities to acquire skills and qualities based on the practical application of knowledge in real-world contexts, and strongly supports developing 21st century competencies and values.
Applied Learning is characterised by these features:
Applied Subjects broaden students’ educational experience in secondary school and expand their range of post-secondary education and subsequent career options. They cater to students who have the interest in and aptitude for specific fields of applied study.
MOE Applied Subjects are O-level subjects and MOE-ITE Applied Subjects are N(T)-level subjects. Both are offered at the upper secondary level.

ALPs provide opportunities for students to discover their strengths and interests, and to find greater relevance and motivation in their learning. They complement the schools’ core academic and student development programmes, and help students acquire a broad and deep foundation for life and lifelong learning. The linkages with the industries and various community sectors also allow students to experience and connect with the world beyond the school. With a more diverse school landscape, students will be able to choose from a range of schools with various distinctive strengths.
Examinations have been tweaked to require students to apply what they have learnt in the classroom to real-world scenarios, instead of just churning out facts. Questions are no longer predictable - they require students to think deeper and make connections. The education system is being updated, to prepare learners for the future.
