National Education (NE) is part of a holistic education. It aims to develop national cohesion, cultivate the instinct for survival as a nation and boost students' confidence in our nation's future. It also emphasises on cultivating a sense of belonging and emotional rootedness to Singapore.
Questions are crafted to unpack each big idea and to stimulate discussions in the classroom. They serve to guide schools to think about nurturing a sense of belonging to the community and country, Singapore's challenges and shared hopes and aspirations as a nation.
Students' daily experiences are used as context to make NE lessons meaningful and relevant. Students will be given opportunities to debate and discover what it means to be a citizen.
Teachers will use teaching strategies such as storytelling, role play, experiential learning, classroom discussions and reflection to instil values, and equip students with social and emotional competencies and skills related to citizenship. In role play, students learn to take others’ perspectives and develop empathy for others.
