Values in Action (VIA) are learning experiences that support students' development as socially responsible citizens who contribute meaningfully to the community, through the learning and application of values, knowledge and skills.
In 2012, MOE announced the reframing of the Community Involvement Programme (CIP) as “Values in Action” (VIA), to place a greater focus on students acquiring values. VIA builds on the strengths of CIP, and encourages students to identify and understand community issues, initiate action among their peers to make a difference and improve the lives of others.
VIA is a learning experience that supports students’ development as socially responsible citizens who contribute meaningfully to the community, through the learning and application of values, knowledge and skills. VIA fosters student ownership over how they contribute to the community. As part of VIA, students reflect on their experience, the values they have put into practice, and how they can continue to contribute meaningfully.
VIA helps students to internalise values learnt through real life experiential activities. These core values are “Respect; Responsibility; Resilience; Integrity; Care and Harmony”.
VIA is an important component of Character and Citizenship Education (CCE). When there is greater student ownership of the VIA learning experiences, students will find VIA more meaningful, and will be more motivated to continue making a difference to the community and nation after leaving school.
The key elements of VIA include promoting values in students through purposeful planning and reflection, and maintaining sustained partnerships with community partners to achieve this aim.
Planning for, managing and successfully completing such programmes in the community teach invaluable life skills, and build community cohesion. We are able to provide support and resources each step of the way.
